July evaluation update: Lamb not listing UA visit

By Javier Morales
wildaboutazcats@gmail.com

Here are some interesting developments regarding the UA’s recruiting this summer with the July evaluation period underway:

• USC coach Kevin O’Neill gets his first verbal commitment: E’town star commits to USC (Louisville Courier-Journal)
• Oak Hill Academy combo guard Doron Lamb is not listing Arizona as one of the schools he will visit: More visits for Lamb. My take: Lamb said he will visit Oklahoma and Kansas this summer after already visiting Kentucky. Lamb likely will not sign in the fall and wait for possibilities in the spring. If he does not visit Arizona this summer, as he originally planned, he can always do that officially this fall. Don’t give up on him yet. He can be an instant starter in 2010-11 at Arizona at shooting guard with former Oak Hill teammate Lamont Jones running the point. Lamb and many of the UA’s potential recruits are currently playing in the King City Classic in Cleveland after participating in the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron on Monday and Tuesday.
• Santa Rita point guard Terrell Stoglin, who has verbally committed to Maryland, continues to impress at the adidas It Takes 5ive Classic, according to scouting guru Van Coleman, who is the lead writer for Hoopmasters.com. This is Coleman’s take on Stoglin: “He continued to impress with his ability to get to the rim off the dribble or threading the needle with some pinpoint passes on penetration. He showed much more leadership today as he led team to elite eight.”
• Trevor Releford, a point guard from Shawnee Mission (Kan.) Bishop Miege, is playing well in front of the UA coaching staff at the It Takes 5ive Classic. Coleman’s viewpoint: “He continues to show the ability to run the show with his handle and passing, but when needed, he can take a game over on offensive end. He hit threes and finished in traffic with regularity.” Jerry Meyer of Rivals.com reports that Releford does not list the UA as one of the schools that have offered him a scholarship. Releford indicated to Meyer that Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, Minnesota and Texas A&M have offered him a scholarship at this point.
• With Sean Miller and Co. targeting bulk and athleticism on the frontcourt for 2010, they must have been salivating over what they saw at the King City Classic on Wednesday. Three of their top frontcourt recruits played well on the first day of the tournament, according to Coleman. Here they are with Coleman’s scouting analysis: James Johnson, a 6-9 center from San Diego (CA) Morse, “continues to impress with his quick feet, length and inside-out touch. He battled on glass and had one monster dunk back.” Adreian Payne, a 6-9 center from Dayton (OH) Jefferson, “used his length to score with jump hook and dunk, but was even more impressive using bounce and length to get on glass.” Terrence Jones , a 6-8 power forward from Portland (OR) Jefferson, “was aggressive to the hoop like he has been all spring, but was much more aggressive on the glass and had a couple acrobatic put-backs.”
• Sam Webb, reporting for the Detroit News, writes that potential UA recruit Trey Ziegler made a couple of baskets against LeBron James during the LeBron James Skills Academy. In terms Ziegler’s recruitment, Webb reports that Michigan and Michigan State are recruiting him hard and that Pittsburgh has entered the picture. Ziegler told Webb: “Nobody has moved up and down. Some schools have been added, but other than that Pittsburgh is probably the main one that I’ve been talking to that is new. Right now (the schools on the list are) Michigan, Michigan State, Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma, Miami, Providence, Dayton, Georgia and LSU. Everybody is about the same. I just want to narrow it down by August.” My gut feeling: Ziegler will wind up at either Arizona, ASU or UCLA. I’ve heard that he feels most comfortable with the UA coaching staff.

Javy,

Thanks for the great stuff on Arizona.
Enjoy the insight into the LAMB.

I remember folks mentionning LAMB visiting Arizona, prior to.
I alwyas liked when the Recruits last visit is with Arizona.

-TZ:
Is coming on strong.
Arizona will have a wealth of guard talent.
I surely hope the UofA staff has made the FOUR HorseMen possible (4 recruits for the 2010 class.)

Is James J. a LOCK for the Wildcat?
Any new updated predicitons?

PS- Can NOT wait for your PRELUDE to Vegas….
Maybe a three piece series on what Vegas will mean this year.
With April gone, Vegas in July take on a much bigger importance.
Are you going to have any WEBCAM interviews?
Hearing how he PECKs the words would be cool.
Or if you can post video of your interviews, with the Javy logo….

I believe VEGAS will put your site in a much bigger national picture.

Very good stufff and look forward to VEGAS.

-Just say NO …to: What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

2. JessieWildcat Says:

AG,

Is there any new information on the Bejarano case?
Was there any arrests made?
Were all of the criminals arrested?

It appears that the Longhorns ,from Phx area , are also helping with getting more tips to law enforcement.

3. Frank Says:

KO has another commit – and this one is a 4* player from CA –

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/07/new-usc-basketball-coach-gets-his-first-big-commitment.html

ESPN has him rated a 92 -

4. davidpk19 Says:

Javier, I hope that you are right and we get ziegler because that would also deliver us McCallum as our point guard.

5. JessieWildcat Says:

Javy,

Is Guard U about to BLOW UP???

Will 2010 delivery TWO 5 Star guards to POINT GUARD U.

THE 5 STAR WATCH:

More on Corrie…………to ARIZONA.

Joseph is focusing on his play with team Canada in New .
Arrives in Toranto before heading out to Vegas.
VEGAS baby.
In August, Corrie will then focus more on his recruitment.

“It’s been a crazy last few weeks for Cory.

Corey is focused on ball…” He’s just wanting to play and do well,” Mrs. Joseph said.

“Probably in mid-to end of August he will focus on it,” added Mrs. Joseph about Cory focusing on his recruitment.

Cory cuts down his list which includes ARIZONA.

He will then decide on FALL visits.

Will CJ be apart of Miller’s FIRST Mid NIGHT MADNESS?

WHO does not want to be apart of Miller’s FIRST Mid NIGHT MADNESS.
NO ONE.
It is going to be ….BOOM BOOM POW.

Note:
Has official word been released on Mid Night MADNESS?

6. Zona4Life Says:

Real quick off the topic question. Does the Wildcat Basketball team have an event like the football team does where you get to meet the players and coach?

Thanks

7. Hurricane Ditka Says:

“KO has another commit – and this one is a 4* player from CA – ”

It is highly questionable wether or not O’Neil can hold on to this guy until 2011. With the impending NCCA sanctions, I predict that he will not, and the UofA will once again be the beneficiary of another USC defection.

8. JessieWildcat Says:

Javy,

Payne is blowing up ,at the King Classic.

Yes, BOOM BOOM POW.

Arizona’s chances on winning a National Championship depends on the Payne threshold. The THIRD member of the FOUR HorseMen. Maybe.

The Millers’ know the Payne and have recruiting him for some time.

If Arizona is able to lure the PAYNE to the Desert….this would be HUGE.

Can the Millers’ pull it off?

Presently, Miller is trailing. Does Arizona have more than a 25% chance on the Payne?
WV seems to be the light leader.
But, with Bobbie things change quickly.

Especially with his recent news about…Darryle Bryant being suspended indefinitely.
The details of the his actions should be available soon.
But, THE BOTTOM LINE….it happened on Bobbie’s watch.

So, Miller has a GOOD chance to BRING the PAYNE.
At least, the Payne will be visiting Arizona soon.
This is a good sign.

A few notes from the King Classic and the Payne…

Payne has great raw talent and upside.

Power forward Adreian Payne (Dayton, Ohio/Jefferson) was terrific.
He displayed the ability to shoot the high-post jumper and even extended his range to the arc.
Payne has a smooth release.

He also made a living at the free-throw line; he posted strong and rebounded in traffic for some timely put backs on the offensive end of the floor.
Payne is a quick leaper who must add strength, but his length allows him to be an excellent shot-blocker.
Payne’s great athletic ability. ”

Go Cats.
.

9. JessieWildcat Says:

Javy,

I can remember a few years back which those same words….Raw Talent and Upside…..was used to decribe a former UofA player.

So, is PAYNE the second coming of J.Hill.

What are your inputs and comparisons of these two players?

Miller must have an inside track on Payne…..and J. Hill NBA lottery success should be enough to BRING the PAYNE.

10. RicktheStick Says:

Would Lamb be an upgrade over MoMo at point? Would already having MoMo around be more of a detterent to attracting new PG’s?

and btw, Jessie….Excellent Black Eyed Peas reference

11. azgood Says:

Jay, supreme coverage as always!

3 things come to mind:

UNO: O’Neill’s always been good at going after and getting the guy no one knows about because no one quite needs or, quite frankly, wants him.

At least not yet.

And interestingly enough, the targeted guy himself hasn’t come into his own ’til
late – way late in the game – because he himself doesn’t yet know his worth, his ability, his place.

If I’m that guy and I think O’Neill’s the answer – just look at how he treats players who aren’t quite sure of themselves – I’m in big trouble.

Look at all those “no name, no where” guys O’Neill supposedly had lined up when he thought he’d be following Coach O at UA.

Where are they now?

Where is O’Neill now, and why?

And the slimy, squirrely, weasely one has the nerve to say he now has a better job at SC than he ever had?

Be advised, Washington.

DUCE: The bigs.

With Arizona’s tradition of excellence when recruiting the San Diego area – Flannigan, Walton, Horne come to mind – do we have an in with the 6-9 Johnson man-child?

Everyone knows THE U’s Ohio connections, so do they work in the ‘Cats’ favor when it comes to getting The Cure, otherwise known as Major Payne – all 6-9 of him…and the hurt he’s bound to inflict?

Been a while since Arizona cultivated its Oregon roots Coach O so valued on the recruiting trail; is it time again with the 6-9 Jones?

The big question: Do one of these guys come fitted with New Mexico’s Alex Kirk, the 6-10 Albuquerqueian phenom, who Gopher head man Tubby just offered, or do they come solo to be placed on the blocks with a year older and wiser Natyazhko and Jacobson?

TRES: This should be fun – a little head-to-head-to-head-to-head for Coach Miller with Izzo, Dixon and Herbert for Ziegler’s services!…Here’s saying things go the way of the fight for Kyryl: Miller 2, Izzo 0, Dixon 0, Herbert 0!

12. JessieWildcat Says:

As Vegas approaches, YOU will begin to hear from LAMB.

From today’s LAMB ALERT.

Right from the King Classic…TODAY….

D.Lamb was interviewed again.

Lamb was speculating who would be a good guard to play along side him…

The first was Eric ,because Wall is believed to be one-and -done.

But, if success means anything to Lamb….and it does….

Guess whos been Lamb’s best play maker with him….which other guard ,playing along side of Lamb ….

Do you need one MoMo second to answer?

Lamb’s words today….
King City Classic on Thursday. “Eric Bledsoe, he’d be there if I go there. He and I will be a good backcourt.”
Lamb has already played with MoMo and they two have some good chemistry and results together.

“Lamb listed his schools as Arizona, Kentucky, Kansas, Oklahoma,…”

Boom Boom Pow

13. mitch Says:

off subject Javier i thought the IMVU add was cool i’am a old guy but liked it very much,so tell them it is very good

14. JessieWildcat Says:

Rivera sounds like a good name for a Arizona player.

It appears that this top 20 player from the 2012 class wants to commit by August.
The pressure and time of recruiting is just too much.

So, how DOES ARIZONA play into the mix?
And wouldn’t it be something to have a 2012 commit prior to any 2010 or 2011 player-commit.

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera is a top talent and ranked as the #20 prospect in his class os 2012.
He is extremely strong and stocky and has a great midrange game.
He also knocked down the threes.
Go to the rim easily.

Rivera wants to get his college decision out of the way as soon as possible.

“Its just a lot of pressure right now,” he said.

Arizona, North Carolina, Wake Forest were some of the schools that have been watching his games.

Rivera did comment that he was still open to the possibility of others getting involved.

15. JessieWildcat Says:

Javy,

Look like we have a LOCK.

Sidiki is Arizona bound.
And we should expect him to be at Mid Night Madness.

From by boy AZ…

Sidiki Johnson, a 6-8 junior from St. Raymond’s in the Bronx, listed Arizona, Kentucky, Providence, St. John’s, Marquette, West Virginia, Rutgers, Virginia Tech and Seton Hall.

He said he’s visited Arizona and Kentucky unofficially.

“[Arizona] was great, nice campus,” he said. ” I went to Kentucky a month ago. It was fun, lots of talented players. It was nice out there.”

“As of right now he loves [Arizona],” Bernard Bowen, Johnson’s mentor, told me recently. “He loves the coaching staff. As of right now, Arizona is the top on his list.”

16. azgood Says:

Hey Frank, where in the article on Gelaun Wheelwright, the jr to be combo-guard, do you get that he’s a **** recruit for SC?

I see the No. 92 ranking, yes, but not a word on the ****.

It was between SDSU and SC, apparently.

Wow.

And this Wheelwright kid knows so much about what he’s just done that he’s banking on the NCAA investigation into Floyd paying OJ Mayo (at least) $1,000 to play for him turning up very little, or that the worst of it will be gone by the time he sets foot on campus.

Character counts, for sure.

Just not as much as that 92 ranking, or the phantom ****.

17. Frank Says:

azgood: scouthoops.com has him as a 4* recruit and #15 PG overall for class 2011.

Sorry no link, I’m on a portable device…
