Countdown to Kickoff ’09: 57 days to UA vs. Central Michigan
|
This is a continuation of WILDABOUTAZCAT.com’s countdown to Arizona’s football season-opener vs. Central Michigan at Arizona Stadium on Sept. 5. If you have suggestions in the days leading to kickoff who is the best player with that uniform number let us know through our “Contact” page. Also feel free to comment if you differ with our choice.
57. Center, Norman Katnik (1978-79): Fitting that he had “Cat” in his last name because he was the consummate team player for former coach Tony Mason. Katnik was second on the team in offensive “helmet stars” during his two years as a center. His son Norm played at USC and in the NFL. The younger Katnik was not the only son of a former Wildcat who played with USC earlier this decade. He was a teammate of Ryan Kalil, also a center and son of former UA center Frank Kalil, who played for the Cats from 1980-82.
ARIZONA’S CURRENT NO. 57: Jovon Hayes, 6-2, 300, Jr. offensive guard, Los Angeles (Dorsey High School). Hayes will contend for a key role at right guard in 2009. He earned travel status for some games in 2008 and 2007. He also saw action in pair of games as a redshirt freshman (Cal and WSU) at mid year. Spent 2006 as an emergency option for the travel team.
NOTE: WILDABOUTAZCATS.COM will also run a similar countdown toward Sean Miller’s inaugural season opener, starting when the season tip-off is 55 days away. Wonder who No. 55 will be? Tip: His nickname is “Big Bird”.
