Countdown to Kickoff ’09: 56 days to UA vs. Central Michigan
|
This is a continuation of WILDABOUTAZCAT.com’s countdown to Arizona’s football season-opener vs. Central Michigan at Arizona Stadium on Sept. 5. If you have suggestions in the days leading to kickoff who is the best player with that uniform number let us know through our “Contact” page. Also feel free to comment if you differ with our choice.
56. Defensive tackle, Joe Salave’a (1994-97): When former UA coach Dick Tomey talked about wanting a team full of Joes, he was not talking about Joe Salave’a, but he should have. In terms of all-out drive and tenacity, few Wildcat linemen have matched Salave’a, who played in the NFL for eight seasons over nine years. In his last two seasons at Arizona, Salave’a tallied 29 tackles for loss. Salave’a has rejoined his former coach Tomey at San Jose State, where he coaches the defensive linemen. And as tough as he was on the field, he is as gentle off of it. He founded the Joe Salave’a Foundation in 2001. The foundation specializes in free football clinics for youngsters in American Samoa and Hawai’i.
ARIZONA’S CURRENT NO. 56: Presently no player with the No. 56 is listed on the UA’s depth chart by arizonaathletics.com.
NOTE: WILDABOUTAZCATS.COM will also run a similar countdown toward Sean Miller’s inaugural season opener, starting when the season tip-off is 55 days away. Wonder who No. 55 will be? Tip: His nickname is “Big Bird”.

Interesting article on Yahoo sports. It would be nice if some of these folks reporting knew what they were talking about. The author states “Still, the sense of excitement surrounding each program as it prepares for the season certainly isn’t what it’s been in recent years.” I don’t think he has seen this blog.

I assume that would be Bob Elliot. If so, that would be a great tribute to the greatest UofA center. 2000+ points and I believe over 1000 rebounds.
