Popularity of UA’s program apparent at NBA Summer League

LAS VEGAS — People like to talk about “Red Sox Nation” and the robust popularity of the Cubs, but in terms of college athletics, the following of Arizona’s basketball program has to rate up there with the best of them. Not only were a pocket of UA fans noticeable in the first day of the Summer League here, but the media requests to speak with former Wildcat forward Chase Budinger amazed one NBA spokesperson. One by one, she asked each member of the media waiting outside Houston’s makeshift locker room — a corner of the Cox Pavilion separated by a curtain — who they wanted to speak with. “Chase Budinger …”, “Can I speak with Chase?”, “Yeah, me too, Chase please. …” The NBA representive incredulously looked at all of us and quipped, “Does anybody here want to speak with Budinger?” This speaks volumes about Arizona’s national image more so than Budinger, in my opinion, because we’re talking about a second-round selection in the NBA draft, the 44th pick overall, a virtual no-man’s land in the landscape of the talent pool for the NBA.
A couple of Houston’s players — James White of Cincinnati and Joey Dorsey, who played with Memphis’ team that was in the 2008 national title game — looked very impressive for the Rockets in their 73-69 win over Golden State. But they went unnoticed as the players departed. One of Houston’s trainers looked over at the media around Budinger and asked, “Did they already name him MVP?” …
Budinger’s story is undeniably captivating. In the recruiting Class of 2006, Rivals.com’s top seven rated prospects in order were: Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Brandan Wright, Budinger, Thaddeus Young, Spencer Hawes, and Javaris Crittenton. Budinger is the only one out of this group who returned for his sophomore season instead of declaring for the NBA. Looking back, now that he slipped to the second round following his junior season, Budinger was asked if he had any regrets about not leaving the UA after his freshman season. He thought a moment about the answer. “I don’t really want to talk about the past,” he said. “I can’t look back and ask, ‘What if I did this?’ or ‘What if I did that?’ All I can think about is what’s ahead of me. I have to move forward.” … Some critics, skeptical of Budinger’s chances of making it to the NBA, have suggested that he return to volleyball. He was the 2006 Mizuno high school player of the year in volleyball. His sister Brittanie had her number retired at the University of San Francisco, and his brother Duncan, who played collegiately at Long Beach State, continues to play professionally. Budinger has not given the possibility of returning to volleyball any thought. “I don’t play as much as I used to,” Budinger said. “I’ve kind of moved away from that, except I still watch my brother play.” …
Instead of playing for the U.S. World University team in Serbia this weekend, UA senior guard Nic Wise will be competing in the Tucson Summer Pro League conducted by former Wildcat forward Corey Williams. The questions can start about whether Wise’s playmaking ability and perimeter shooting could have been an asset for the U.S. team, which lost to Russia on Friday and is relegated to playing in the Bronze game against Israel. Against the Russians, Penn State point guard Talor Battle made just 1 of 11 shots and missed both of his three-point attempts. Here’s a proposal: USA Basketball should hire its own coach, perhaps a former NBA coach or college coach, and have its own scouts to determine its teams. Too much politics are involved when you have somebody like Bo Ryan of Wisconsin coaching a team. Granted, Ryan did not pick the team himself, but you know that he and Illinois coach Bruce Weber (who was on the selection committee) wanted as many Big Ten players as possible. Echoing what Wise told our Anthony Gimino, you know Ryan and Weber did not want to upset their Big Ten counterparts because they have to face them next season. Why does USA Basketball put itself in such a position? … Former UA player Luke Walton has a special bond with his father, Hall of Famer Bill Walton, as he expressed in his latest blog. Among all the heartfelt expressions for his father, Walton writes, “Winning an NBA title also prevents you from throwing any smack my way. I’m in the club now. And I don’t want to hear anything about NCAA championships, let’s keep the conversation on NBA titles.” … Walton and his buddy Richard Jefferson, both members of one of Arizona’s best recruiting classes ever in 1998, will conduct a basketball camp later this month in Orange County (Calif.). The camp runs from July 27-30 and includes boys and girls ages 7-18. The fact that this camp is being held near Los Angeles and not Tucson also shows how the popularity of Arizona’s program has spread. …
PGA golfer Davis Love III recently told reporters at the John Deere Classic that former UA golfer Ricky Barnes is big enough to play in another sport: Football, because of his size. Barnes is 6-2 and 200 pounds. “Now everybody has a trainer, everybody is working out and everybody is strong,” Love III said. “You get kids like — big kids like Ricky Barnes that look like they ought to be playing in the NFL and not on the PGA TOUR, and that’s the biggest difference. Better athletes, stronger athletes.” … Barnes, despite finishing tied for second in the U.S. Open, has yet to qualify for the British Open and he doesn’t appear likely to make it to Turnberry with his recent performances at the AT&T National (tied for 66th, 9-over-par) and this week’s Johen Deere Classic (tied for 62nd after second round, 1-under-par). …
Former UA walk-on David Bagga is not drifting away into oblivion. Bagga is striving to play in the NBA’s Developmental League and he is writing a book about his experiences at the UA. The book will be titled “Walk This Way: Memoirs of a Walk-on,” He hopes to get it published by November. Bagga told the Orange County Register that he decided to go ahead with the book after consulting with his parents. “Because of the economy we’re in right now, (my parents) said ‘Go for it. You have nothing to lose’,” said Bagga, who graduated from Arizona with a 3.0 GPA. “They said ‘If this is what you want to do, we’re going to support you 100 percent. But don’t chase this until you’re 30 years old.’ I’m only going to give it another six to eight months.” During the three-day NBDL tryout in Hawthorne, Calif., last month, Bagga averaged 10 points a game, including a perfect 6-for-6 on three-pointers. … Remember these walk-ons in the Lute Olson era?: Bret Brielmaier (2004-08), Jason Lee (1996-97), Bagga (2005-08), Josh Pastner (1996-2000), John Ash (1996-2001), Cliff Johns (1992-93) Jason Stewart (1996-99), Beah Muhlbach (2003-04), and Matt Brase (2003-05). Former UA football players who walked on the basketball team include Kelvin Eafon (1994-96), Ortege Jenkins (1997-98) and Craig Bergman (1996-98). Don’t expect any more UA football players to play for the basketball program, although it would be nice to see Rob Gronkowski bang inside wouldn’t it? UA football coach Mike Stoops is particular about his players sticking to football to avoid injury. … Ash is starting to make a name for himself away from the basketball court. He recently released his first CD titled “Johnny Ash” with “Conspiring Along the Way” as the lead track. You can listen to a taste of music by visiting his MySpace page. In an interview this year with the Bucks’ Web site, Richard Jefferson commented that he listens to Ash’s music. “I really don’t listen to that much music,” Jefferson said in response to a question about what music he listens to before a game. “My boy who I went to college with whose CD is about to come out, his name is Johnny Ash. His CD is about to come out, that’s who I normally listen to right now because he’s my boy and I’m excited for him. Outside of that, I don’t really listen to music. I’m normally watching tape or joking around with everybody before the game.” …
How explosive is potential UA recruit Trey Ziegler, a shooting guard from Mount Pleasant (Mich.)? Slam Magazine gave this description of a play in the King City Classic in Cleveland this week: “Go end to end and finish with a two-handed dunk, and you get your name in the paper. Nice work, Trey Ziegler of Michigan.” …. The magazine also reports that 6-9 center Alex Kirk from Los Alamos, N.M., has a game that is “sub-atomic.” Kirk lists Arizona among his favorites along with many Pac-10 schools. I consulted a slang dictionary with no luck for the definition of “sub-atomic”. In the literal sense it is something that is smaller than an atom. Does this mean Kirk’s game is non-potent or that he plays smaller than his size? Somebody help me out. … The signing of of former UA center Channing Frye to a two-year deal worth $4.07 million with Phoenix, means that he joins Steve Kerr and Jud Buechler as former Wildcats to suit up for the Suns. Frye, who graduated from Phoenix St. Mary’s High School, adds to the Wildcats’ presence with the Suns joining UA grads Kerr (general manager and president of basketball operations) and team owner Robert Sarver. Sarver has drawn criticism recently for his personnel decisions. He is becoming more proactive in the process of negotiations with players. He flew overnight with Kerr and Suns coach Alvin Gentry to Orlando to meet with Grant Hill on Friday morning. Hill decided to re-sign with the Suns for $3 million in 2009-2010 with an option of $3.24 million in 2010-2011 rather than sign a one-year deal worth $5.85 million with the Knicks, according to the Arizona Republic. …
One compilation of preseason college football rankings indicates the predicted order of finish in the Pac-10 will be: 1, USC; 2, Oregon; 3, Cal; 4, Oregon State; and 5, UCLA. After that, it’s anybody’s guess. … The Sporting News is not too keen about the Wildcats’ chances and one of its writers Dave Curtis predicts that Mike Stoops’ job is on the line. Curtis believes the Wildcats are “in for a mighty tumble.” He predicts the UA to finish 4-8 in the upcoming season. “I’m not ready to bet on Mike Stoops and company as a consistent winner. Last year’s success had more to do with a down conference (and a spiritless BYU team in the Las Vegas Bowl) than anything fantastic the Wildcats showed. They’ll play a new quarterback in 2009, a new left tackle and a lot of new at linebacker. Six road games dot the schedule, including a daunting mid-September game at Iowa. The ’Zona of old returns, and it might be looking for a new coach come winter.” Curtis’ colleague at Sporting News, Matt Hayes, agrees. He also believes the UA will finish 4-8. Hayes’ assessment: “Mike Stoops has one winning season in five years at Arizona, and his teams have a history of slow starts and lousy performances against non-BCS teams. So what comes to Tucson to start the season, you ask? MAC heavyweight Central Michigan and its dangerous, pass-happy offense. If Arizona loses, all that momentum from last year’s bowl season will wash away. That makes things a lot tougher on a team that will inevitably have a quarterback controversy — Nick Foles or Matt Scott? — and has a lack of elite players in the defensive front seven. If you can’t stop offenses in the Pac-10, you better at least be able to score enough to keep up. A loss to CMU has Arizona staring at a 1-3 record for the month of September (CMU, Northern Arizona, at Iowa, at Oregon State), and a big step back from 2008.” … If this kind of stuff does not stir the Wildcats, I don’t know what will. Makes you look forward to Sept. 5 and the season-opener against Central Michigan at Arizona Stadium even more, does it not?

Has ARIZONA offer this player, YET?
Nigel Williams-Goss
6-foot-1 point guard ,in Clackamas, Ore.
Williams-Goss is widely considered to be one of the nation’s best players in his class.
Peck said. “He’s excited. He’s been excited since last year, after he came down here for a couple of days to see our setup and how we operate.
The No. 1 thing for him, why he pursued us all along, was with his future in mind. He needs it, he said, and he wants to get better.”
Time to take UT out of that program.
I hope Archie can make some big head way into Peck.
CJ should be the first piece of that puzzle.
CJ is a long term impact for the UofA….he will start the ball rolling.

Will be interesting to see if the football team does, in fact, flop. If so, does Arizona have the cash to hire a new coach? Stoops’ contact was extended, with a nice raise, to 2013. Not sure what the buyout would be but I’m guessing it’s not cheap.
Every year, there’s nothing but optimism until the new season begins. I’m so sick of it, I rarely read the pre-season articles. So it’s nice, in a way, to Arizona being taken down a peg or two.
That said, I think Arizona will do better than the Sporting News predicts. Stoops is a good coach who took over the program when it was in a hole. Over time, he’s improved the quality of the players. I don’t think we’ll be contending for the Pac-10 title, but I do see us winning some tough games and making another bowl.
If Arizona does, in fact, flop, I still don’t see Stoops going anywhere. I’m guessing he gets at least another two years. That’s what winning a bowl game (any bowl game) does for you at Arizona. By the way, if Stoops keeps winning, expect to begin hearing rumors of him being offered bigger, better jobs back east.

Just read on ESPN.com that PG Trevor Releford has been offered a scholie by UA.

Jessie — here’s some local video of Nigel Williams-Goss. BTW, he’s claiming 6’2″ now, obviously still growing. I guess we’ll lose track of him up here now that he’s heading for Vegas.

Any idea where Curtis and Hayes went to school?
Or, did they?
So Arizona beat up on a “spiritless” BYU team in the Vegas Bowl?
That might be news to BYU and the Vegas Bowl committee.
Not to mention UA.
The ‘Cougs could call the Vegas Bowl their own they’ve been there so much.
And when something like this post-season reward of a game – your history, your legacy, your reputation, a money-maker for you and the MWC – is in play, spirit, especially in Sin City, is something I believe we can all agree is in plentiful supply.
New QB, new LT, new LBs, a September loss to CMU, six road games and not one of them winnable?
These jokers from TSN obviously don’t know UA football in the Stoops era.
All those “obstacles” these “experts” speak of would be a walk in the park in any other Stoops lead ‘Cat year.
Please.
THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA athletic department, Coach Stoops, his staff, the team, this program and its followers wrote the book on adversity.
And we ain’t about to let these clowns at TSN stop us.
Hell no!

Thanks for the Nigel video.
He seems like a young person beyond his years.
He can surely communicated rather well.
I am sure Peck will make his a better player.
That must be a first,….four years at Find….

Hey Portland, is it as obvious to you all there in Portland as it is to the rest of us that Nate McMillan would just as soon rid the Blazers of anything UA in favor of everyting you know what?
We’ll see if Pendergraph is the answer to what ails McMillan’s team.
And we’ll see if Bayless gets off of McMillan’s bench this season.
One thing we all know is that these people from that other, uh, school are sure leading a charmed life.
This is how “progress” works in the Herbert era.
Herbert gets Harden by hiring Pera.
Pendergraph goes to Portland because McMillan’s son, Jamelle, plays for Herbert and is a friend of Pendergraph’s.
But now…
Harden has left to where they’ll surely make him go right, and he’ll soon be gone.
Herbert has no more positions to offer a HS coach looking to be used as a player’s, head coach’s and team’s meal ticket, or is it the other way around?
And even if Herbert had a spot, no one post-Harden wants to play, or coach, in front of empty seats against UIPUI, BYU or Baylor.
McMillan no longer has Frye to blame.
But he does have another former UA NBA lottery pick in Bayless most pro teams would love to have that he must find a place for, or else…

azgood: Do you honestly believe that an NBA coach, who gets fired quicker than a pistol, will purposefully not play players because of where they went to college? Really?
July 11th, 2009 at 9:13 PM
Frank, since you asked, I’ll say this: Was it not Coach McMillan, along with Coach D’Antoni and Coach K, who cut Arenas from the Olympic team?
Has it not been Gilbert crusading the NBA ladscape to make his point: That Coach K, Coach D and Coach M missed the boat when they sacrificed a deserving player for ACC politics?
How long did McMillan give Frye to prove himself?
Do you honestly think McMillan gave Bayless a serious look last season?
Do you think McMillan truly has Bayless in his plans?
Is it mere coincidence that Pendergraph finds himself in Portland just as Frye finds himself not in Portland, not in McMillan’s plans, not on the Blazer bench to be scapegoated?
Javier mentioned that the Portlanders, the Oregonians themselves, responded to a poll by saying overwhelmingly that they’d much rather see Bayless in a Trail Blazer uniform than not in one.
I presume, to follow the logic or sequencing of events as laid out in the wishes of those who buy the tickets and seat themselves down to cheer their team to victory in Portland, that these same fans would like to see Jarryd not only in a Portland uniform, but that they’d also like to see him get some, yes, serious time on the court as well.
Who makes that call?
We alll know that Frye and Bayless were high first round NBA draft picks and that Pendergraph went in the second round…to Sacramento.
You’ll have to draw your own conclusions as to Coach McMillan’s motives.
July 11th, 2009 at 10:14 PM
azgood: You are comparing the selection of the USA team to selecting the players for a specific NBA team? Selecting All-Stars who then lose the gold medal game will not cost the USA coaches their full-time jobs as NBA or college coaches. Really? Here’s what actually happens: coaches play the players they believe will give them the best chance of winning thus helping the coaches keep their very fragile jobs. When coaches lose, they get fired. As far as I recall, Portland made the playoffs, so in Nate’s mind, he played the best players he thought. I seriously doubt that he didn’t play Bayless and Frye because of where they went to college. You don’t have to respond, because that’s just too funny… And I don’t know what else to say except that you are absolutely entitled to your opinion as am I.
July 11th, 2009 at 10:44 PM
Frank, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
One more point and I’ll put this sucker to bed.
The dynamics here are such – Arenas, Frye, Bayless are involved with Coach K, Coach McMillan and Jeff Pendergraph, after all – that for me, anyhow, it looks more than a little like human emotions, personal bias and political maneuverings could be – could be – what’s being manifested with what we got going on.
Having been around the block a time or two, I know all too well that this wouldn’t be the first time a coach has held a grudge against a player, or vice versa.
How that all plays out, what it looks or sounds like to you and me, is open for interpretation.
July 11th, 2009 at 10:55 PM
Oh and one other thing: I’m sure you, me and tons of fans will be tuned in the night or day the Suns play Portland.
It was sure fun watching Arenas go off on D’Antoni and his boys.
I’ll get equal pleasure when I see Wise do the same to Wisconsin, Washington and, should we be lucky enough to run into them sometime, Syracuse.
Frye, and let’s hope it’s Pendergraph down on the blocks going against him, doing a number on McMillan would be absolutely delightful!
July 12th, 2009 at 6:14 AM
Sometimes I think we’re all a little too quick to see conspiracies and politics where they don’t necessarily exist. Frye played the same position as LaMarcus Aldridge who had already cemented himself as the starter, and he frankly played the position a little too similarly to Aldridge. Coaches usually want a backup that they can play alongside the starter at least for stretches, and there’s no way I’d want to have the two of them sharing the court for any significant length of time. Look at who Portland went after in free agency. Paul Millsap plays the position significantly differently as he’s more of a banger inside.
As for Bayless, he has the same knock on him in Portland that he had here; that he’s too short to be a SG and not yet skilled enough at the PG position to be reliable there. Portland management is very high on his long-term potential however. I suspect Bayless’ minutes will rise in his second season since he’s a little more experienced, although it will probably still stay under 20mpg.
I don’t expect Pendergraph to get anywhere near the action Frye got if he even makes the team. I suppose that might change if Utah matches the offer for Millsap.
July 12th, 2009 at 2:28 PM
Re: Frye, Bayless, Blazers, Nate McMillan, Pendergraph, etc
I can’t speak to Coach McMillan’s motives. I have read the local press and listened to countless interviews about Blazers’ directions, roster moves, playing time decisions, etc. Here are a few points to add to what azgood, Frank, and Wally have posted:
– Kevin Pritchard has Paul Allen’s backing on personnel moves; Pritchard runs the draft and trades with input from McMillan and others; Allen has final approval but has never gone against Kevin;
– Channing Frye was more valuable as insurance than as a change-of-pace backup to Aldridge; when LaMarcus was hurt, Frye would be available to plug in to the starting PF spot without disrupting the “feel” of the rotation; as a backup, the regular rotation went to Travis Outlaw over Frye; Frye was not picked up by the Blazers (before the draft and Pendergraph came up) in order to clear cap room for free agency or unbalanced trade purposes; he was seen as expendable;
– it seems clear that Pritchard still loves Bayless; McMillan’s nature seems to be to balance winning (comes first) with doses of player/role development; McMillan is low key with the media, so what he’s thinking is usually an exercise in inference; Nate played Sergio Rodriguez over Bayless for the last third of last year, but it seemed to be giving him a final chance to demonstrate his value and also to showcase him for trade value (as transpired in fact), again with an eye to cap room;
– the Blazers may yet trade for a star PG, but they recently walked away from a 3-team trade that would have brought Kirk Hinrich because the Bulls wanted Bayless and Pritchard refused; Steve Blake is a true PG who can shoot the 3, but as of now Bayless is the starter of the future; on his part, Jerryd knows he must learn to run the team and he’s saying all the right things about that; tomorrow is his first summer league game, so we’ll see how it goes;
– Pritchard and McMillan both want a tougher backup PF, as the Millsap offer illustrates, as Wally points out; they had some interest in Brandon Bass, for another example; but the backup PF is not the top priority — that would be a star SF who can play a point-forward role, as the Hedo Turkoglu recruitment illustrates; so if Pendergraph sticks (not guaranteed), he will have had to demonstrate that as well as beating out Dante Cunningham.
Frye and Bayless both have chances to redirect their career arcs next year. Budinger and Hill to start theirs, obviously. Can Gilbert come back? Shakur, Adams, Salim? It should be interesting. Bear Down!!

Javy,
Looks like alot of recruits, PARENTS, have no problem talking to reporters.
As insight into ARIZONA position would be cool.
Another Recruit:
Cameron Clark:
a forward,6-8 and growing; from Texas.
Highly ranked.
FIRST…accordingl to his father….HIS RECRUITMENT is WIDE OPEN.
Per his father….”his recruitment is still very open,” added Clark
Second— about 12 months ago, the Clarks made a list of about 15 colleges.
And by August, the list will be shorten to about 4 schools.
And ARIZONA is currently on that TOP12 list and will SURELY make the SHORTEN LIST.
Third– The Clarks are not just looking at a basketball program. They are looking for a school which will provide a respectful degree. Clark is presently interested in a degree in Business.
Education and obtaining a degree are important.
The parents are very pratical ,straight forward, and pratical individuals.
The type of parents which are not fouled by the hype.
The type of parents which will be equally impressed with Coach Miller.
The player is Arizona Good.
And a good Arizona match.
PS-
I have started to read more about….ARIZONA GOOD.
Yes, more schools are copiing the phrase ARIZONA GOOD.
With the obvious change in the school name.
So, stop it. It is trademarked for ARIZONA use only.
If I was Bill, TM the use of “the Arizona brand”….is also starting to get some play.
Again the school substitutes its name.
Sorry, http://WWW…YOU can not use the TM. Tell your boyz.
