DAY29

By Javier Morales

All you need to know about the Arizona basketball program with only 29 remaining until the season-opening tipoff against NAU at McKale Center on Nov. 15:

  • Way back in 1951, Wichita State made 29 field goals against the Wildcats. Nothing special there. Not until you realize the Shockers attempted a shocking 118 field goals — an opponent record at Arizona. That means Wichita State attempted nearly three attempts per minute, which is crazy, especially considering the shot clock did not exist back then.
  • Most Wildcat fans know by now that Arizona has two of the longest winning streaks at home in NCAA history: 81 games between 1945-51 and 71 games between 1987-92. The UA’s longest road winning streak, not including neutral sites, is 19. That streak started on Jan. 17, 1927 and ended Feb. 15, 1929.
  • The Wildcats finished 29-4 in Sean Elliott’s senior season of 1988-89 at the hands of UNLV in the Sweet 16. Had they UA won, it would have recorded at least 30 victories in consecutive seasons. The Final Four team of 1988 was 35-3. The 1988-89 team finished 29-4. That was the closest the UA had consecutive 30-win seasons in the Lute Olson era.
  • Olson is one of only three coaches in NCAA history to record 29 or more 20-win seasons. His streak of 20 consecutive was the longest active streak in the nation for any one coach.
  • The most shots attempted by a UA player is 29 by Herman Harris on Jan. 6, 1977 against San Diego State. He made nine of them.

Not sure how many people watched Midnight Madness on ESPNU last night but Andy Katz seems to be on the Arizona bandwagon.

  2. lutefan Says:

What did Katz say? Here’s his blog published yesterday and he was hyping Craig Robinson and Udub as the “next guard U”, among other things but not a single word of AZ.

  3. UAWildcat Says:

Katz said that Miller will have the most impact as a new head coach other than Calipari and will get Arizona to the tournament to keep the streak alive.
