Any questions about tonight’s scrimmage?
By Anthony Gimino
You can follow a free live streaming video from Arizona athletics official site, but not everybody will be able to see it with their own eyes … so let me help.
I will be at tonight’s Arizona basketball exhibition against Augustana, covering for our partner TucsonCitizen.com, and my question to you is: What questions do you have?
Fire away in the comments section before, during or after the game, and I will try at answer any questions you might have about personnel or whatever … and/or I will try to ask any questions to coach Sean Miller or the available players.

November 4th, 2009 at 3:10 PM
I’m interested to see how the defense responds to Miller’s challenge. Who is causing havoc for the other team? Are they communicating and working together as a unit (seemingly the biggest problem under KO)? Has the team started to show the toughness which has been Sean Miller’s trademark?
November 4th, 2009 at 3:16 PM
How’s the atmosphere? What is the mood of the fanbase? Attendance?
November 4th, 2009 at 3:58 PM
I’m expecting an aggressive wing game driven by the backcourt. Comment if this happens not to be the case.
This site …

… is supposed to have a free webcast for the game tonight as it wont be televised.
November 4th, 2009 at 4:06 PM
With all the terrific athletes Sean Miller can put on the floor, how does he position people and/or what “rules” does he teach in order to maximize the chances for offensive rebounds (but of course without giving up floor balance to defend fast breaks)?
November 4th, 2009 at 4:11 PM
Does Miller preach an agressive defense, i.e. looking for steals, overplaying, traps, double teams OR does he preach a solid defense, i.e. half-court, preventing penetration in the paint?
Or does he adjust based on personnel, i.e. quick players more aggressive, or slower players more solid half-court?
November 4th, 2009 at 4:34 PM
The free web cast is after you join for 9.95 or 14.95,that’s what I found out so will listen on radio..HI FRANK WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN
November 4th, 2009 at 4:38 PM
hey mitch!
i’ve been here just haven’t felt the need to post anything –
my brother just called me an hour ago and invited me to the game tonight – i’m excited to see the new era of UA basketball!
i’ll give everyone my two cents after the game!
Go Cats – and hopefully Augustana is no LeMoyne!
November 4th, 2009 at 5:01 PM
Mitch,
After it has you register your email address and password and takes you to the screen to pay, there should be tabs on the top. Just click on live events and it should take you to the exhibition game and let you click on it.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:15 PM
Yes, just do as Zach says. Just fill in the registration, and once it asks for payment info, just click on Live Events and the Augustana game is there.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:34 PM
I didn’t even have to register…. as far as I can tell. Has anyone been able to get a feed yet?
November 4th, 2009 at 5:46 PM
I can not get it to work either and I have paid my $10.
I have had this problem every time I try to use this ua/cbs site.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:49 PM
got audio now… you guys should be getting it.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:55 PM
Just started getting the live feed few minutes ago.
November 4th, 2009 at 5:55 PM
Not me, it might be my pop up blocker but I am an idiot with this stuff.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:10 PM
Here’s one, Anthony and Javier.
Coach and players: Can a 12 man rotation work?
Ponder this…
C
Kyryl – 20 min
Jacobson – 10 min
Williams – 10 min
PF
Williams – 15 min
Parrom – 15 min
Hill – 10 min
SF
Horne – 20 min
Shumpert – 10 min
Hill – 10 min
SG
Lavender – 15 min
Fogg – 15 min
MoMo – 10 min
PG
Wise 25 min
Judkins – 10 min
MoMo – 5 min
Why not?
November 4th, 2009 at 6:13 PM
starting lineup…. nic, momo, Lavendar, Kyryl, Horne
Fogg is out sick
November 4th, 2009 at 6:13 PM
Hill and Williams 1st off
November 4th, 2009 at 6:16 PM
correction… parrom, Hill and williams 1st off and a big scoring spurt
November 4th, 2009 at 6:30 PM
Parrom doing a lot of scoring…. man… I didn’t get to watch the red-blue… but I think this team looks good! Deep. Running and gunning. Defense…. eh… will get better. But the tools are there.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:41 PM
Is Fogg out? Don’t recall seeing him in the first half.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:42 PM
Should read before I post…just saw lutefan’s comment on Fogg. Sorry.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:53 PM
50-35 at the half.
I’d be happy with a 100-60 final score.
Defense has looked pretty bad at times. Couple of freshman moves. Wise made a few mistakes. Horne is playing great. Parrom playing great. Momo knocking down shots. Kyryl is not impressive as others touted last week. Plus we’re having a hard time getting Kyryl the ball.
The commentators did say that they practiced the team pretty hard for 90 minutes today. I think it’s showing a little bit.
I really like the block A logo. I thought I would miss the desert log but I don’t.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:55 PM
I can not get the video but I see 23 bench points already. I can hardly believe that. Nice to be deep for once despite the inexperience. He must be substituting very often.
Look for me in the obituary tomorrow either from suicide or a stroke over this Bleep bleepedy bleep bleep video problem I am having.
November 4th, 2009 at 7:00 PM
I’m scared that Brian Jeffries is stumbling over the name Natyazhko. If he is having trouble, what chance do I have?
I love the pace and the ball movement. Not many bad shots so far. Parrom has looked great scoring and passing.
November 4th, 2009 at 7:01 PM
J…. I had to download some sort of silverlight software and the link for the software download came on automatically.
Miller brought in 4 players at once during one point. Everybody got lots of minutes. And the thing is…. when the bench came in we seemed to go on a scoring run.
November 4th, 2009 at 7:08 PM
Hi J
I wouldn’t want you to miss the webcast of the game. I have a degree in “this stuff”. Try this:
Get the latest and greatest Silverlight software.
http://silverlight.net/
If that fails, try another browser.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html
I’m watching this in Firefox with a 64bit operating system, something that Silverlight states they don’t support.
I’ve had problems with CBS College Sports in the past, so that could be it.
How bout those frenetic rotations? Wow, that will get opposing defenses wondering….
November 4th, 2009 at 7:19 PM
Ugh…I think the refs should let them play a little more.
November 4th, 2009 at 7:26 PM
our rebounding is weak
November 4th, 2009 at 7:29 PM
Anthony,
Which Arizona coaches are the most vocal during the game?
November 4th, 2009 at 7:34 PM
They aren’t even going for the rebounds.
November 4th, 2009 at 7:34 PM
lute fan I agree, the box outs need work. defense will improve when they learn their switches (sometimes they get lost). but LOVE the effort on d because they seem to know that it is all about moving your feet. and i don’t doubt he can hit it in practice, but i’m not sold he can shoot in the game yet (i.e. zane). i have no doubt fogg starts when healthy. but overall very nice. love the dept and effort!
November 4th, 2009 at 7:47 PM
Sol Hill has been nothing but a liability tonight. Of the five freshman I see him as the least valuable.
November 4th, 2009 at 7:56 PM
Question JM (or anyone else)
Last year’s squad plays this same game, at the same point in the season…..is the score closer than this game (up 18; granted 3 mins left)? Thinking back, as the big 3 went, so did UA. Plus they struggled putting teams away and seemed to have trouble all year on D (the drive and kick would kill us).
I have to think this years team is a bit better……
November 4th, 2009 at 8:03 PM
this team might be a little bit better on D. But remember last year’s team had that crazy zone and if the other team was hitting we were in trouble.
What I miss the most is Jordan Hill gobbling up all those rebounds. We are going to seriously miss that this year. Kyryl does not seem to have a knack for getting the ball.
The players did not seem to play with much emotion tonight.
November 4th, 2009 at 8:07 PM
Drivera, I agree. This team plays with spunk and heart. I see nothing that can’t be corrected with time.
I actually thought Hill was instinctual to the rebound on the defensive end, but I’ll see with the stats in the post-game.
Overall, I honestly thought we wouldn’t be at this level yet. I’m impressed.
November 4th, 2009 at 8:10 PM
Indeed very dry emotion-less game. I think it’s in part due to the 90 minute workout before the game, and the refs just basically dictated the pace of the game the second half. Aweful control of the pace on their behalf, should have let the players play a little more.
Jones looks solid, I like what I saw from Jacobson. Parrom and Williams also look solid. Kyryl had an off night. No one but Jamelle can rebound.
We can only get better though, I can definitely see little sparks here and there. I think by the second half of the pac 10 season we will be a solid team.
November 4th, 2009 at 8:14 PM
I,m glad I,m not the only one having trouble with the web cast.
I thought it was because of wild blue satellite, it would play for 13 second and then load 40sec at the most .looking for box scores and min. anybody have them
November 4th, 2009 at 9:02 PM
Here’s my two cents:
Hill – agree with Ashton, he’s got a knack for the ball and has excellent vision. There was a two minute sequence where he had two rebounds, two assists and two buckets. And his defense up high was great.
Parrom – very nice surprise. He has a good mid-range shot and can get to the bucket easily. He can take a hit without it affecting his shot.
Jones – had a great sequence in the second half on consecutive plays where he dished to D Williams for dunks. His defense needs to get better, but the effort is there.
Williams – he will be a beast. He’s strong, has a great motor, and he’s quick and long. Great effort tonight.
Kyryl – I haven’t figured out whether he’s a step slow or he needs better conditioning. Either way, right now he is lumbering. He doesn’t know how to pass when he is double-teamed, and he struggled running the floor. One play stood out: it was a three on one fast break with Wise running on the right with Kyryl in the middle; Wise drove so the defender would commit to him and then he passed it to Kyryl, who I kid you not, seemed as if he was walking; and what should have been a slam dunk was instead a weak two-foot jumper (which he missed) but luckily he was fouled His defense was awful. He seemed out of position many times.
Overall, Arizona’s defense seems to improve with Hill, Parrom, and Williams. They were more active, and Williams IMO should be considered for the starting 5 position. I hope it’s only conditioning for Kyryl otherwise we should all tamper our expectations in regards to how much Kyryl will contribute as a true freshman this year.
That being said, I am so excited to see these young men grow! The second half of the season the UA will be awesome. I see the first four freshmen contributing immediately.

I think its a little early to start counting guys out.. Regardless of solomans production today would you rather have given that ‘ship to max weipking?! I have no doubt each of these guys will have their role by January.
That said, what I can see we need to improve on is giving up those open looks, finishing around the basket (first game jitters I hope is all that was) and REBOUNDING!! These guys have to remember to get a body on someone and establish position as soon as that shot is off.
I liked jamelles game today (happy birthday) I also liked the unselfish play all around.
I’d like to see more of d williams, I really wanna see brendan j in action more tues and I wanna see garland break into the rotation..
Bear down!!
November 4th, 2009 at 9:30 PM
Doesn’t look like too many people are posting this late at night so I’ll take another stab at it. Besides the 1290 folks ended the show early.
I’m in a big “agreement-fest” with Frank. Your rundown was superb. If I heard it right (KCUB 1290 AM), Hill ended with 5 defensive and 7 offensive rebounds, but I wont attest to that. It was the second half effort from Hill that impressed (still looking for a stat page mitch).
What really stood out for me was the freshmen. I expected a lot more stupid mistakes and lapses of judgment. I saw lapses, but not so much on judgment. Just a step slow and trying to figure out the new system. That is why I think we have the makings of a really good second-half-of-the-season team. The freshmen’s athleticism was freaky.
If the refs hadn’t decided to hold their own exhibition clinic in the second half, it was easily 100 points scored and a confidence builder for UA. If I was looking for conspiracy theories, maybe the refs are making their own statement regarding an East coast coaching mentality. Their actions in the second half was strange…
We may actually get out of the first half of the season with offense.

Brendan j = brendans jump shot
November 4th, 2009 at 9:43 PM
I am happy to turn my attention to anything that doesn’t involve the Yankees.
Frank, nice analysis. In terms of Kyryl, I will say this: Miller has consistently called him the “most talented” of the freshmen. I’d say that we can expect him to be a solid contributor this year. Since we are devoid a real post presence, I think Kyryl is going to get a lot of minutes this year. Hopefully he just had an off-night.
UCLA down 4 at home to an NAIA team w/ 2 minutes to play.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:45 PM
Ashton,
Here is a link to the box score.

62-61 ucla ousts concordia. Its too early to think anything of it. But its still pretty funny
November 4th, 2009 at 10:00 PM
Ahem..
Solomon Hill – 1 offensive and 6 defensive rebounds for a total of seven.
My bad. Thanks wild – catfan.
On the subject of Division II teams pulling off the upset, has everyone seen this?

AZtransplant:
Thanks for the props – I too hope it was an off night, but I also saw the Red-Blue scrimmage and left with the same assessment. Kyryl, though obviously gifted with some good post moves, is a step slower than everyone else. Even Jacobson is quicker. My gut (and hope) is that it is simply lack of conditioning – he just looks tired after a few minutes. So if it is, I do expect Kyryl to have a more significant impact the second half of the season.
November 5th, 2009 at 6:20 AM
I have to admit, I was expecting a much worse showing than I saw last night. I think Kevin Parrom and Derrick Williams are going to be outstanding. Solomon Hill is a great role player. I don’t see him averaging 20 points a game or being our top scorer, but I can definitely see where he could have games where he just blows up! MoMo was ancy. That’s the only word I can use to describe his performance. I think he is trying to do to much and only focused on being “U of A’s next great guard”. I believe he has the potential to be one of our greats, but he has to let the game come to him. I really hope Wise’s tutelage rubs off on MoMo. Horne is a beast this year. I was just watching him away from the ball, and he is all over the court. If he can keep this play, he could easily make a case for an All-American. And of course, we all know what Wise can do. I mean look at his production in what 19 minutes? 12 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals? Imagine a whole game worth of stats. I think Wise testing the waters last year was the best thing he could’ve done. It appears he was finally told what we already knew, and he really did everything in his power to improve his overall game.
I know we still have A LOT of work to do, especially on defense. One thing we’re going to have to seriously improve is rebounding, both offensive and defensive. I mean we need to establish position and block out. Not to mention, we also need to take care of the rock. Now I know we’re going to have a high number of turnovers (at least at the beginning of the season) because we are so young, but that is exactly why we really need to focus on trying to speed of the learning curve of our freshman. To me, it appears KPear and Sol Hill are our smartest freshman, but that’s just my opinion.
Garland Judkins and Alex Jacobson did exactly what they need to do. Come in, plug some holes and get some points if possible. I thought Judkins was rather impressive last night.
All in all, it may be a long first half of a season, but I am stoked. I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for AZ Basketball. I’d probably say 2001 when were preseason number 1.
