Football

The Pac-10 has four teams in the BCS Top 20 rankings, but is it really all that good?

No. 8 Oregon appears to be the conference’s best bet for a BCS game with a much anticipated game looming at 18th-ranked Arizona in a couple of weeks. In order for that game to be meaningful for the Cats, they must take care of woeful Washington State tomorrow and win at No. 20 California next week.

No. 12 USC faces an ASU team that — believe it or not — has not beaten a top 15 team at home since the 1998 season (0-13 record against such foes).

The two main reasons why the Pac-10 should not be too proud of its four ranked teams: USC is in the midst of a down year by its standards and Cal is not as good as its ranking suggests. How can a team be in the top 20 after losing by a combined score of 72-6 to Oregon and USC? The Golden Bears’ only win against a team with a current winning record happened in the second week of the season against Eastern Washington (6-3).

What does this say about the state of college football today with the Pac-10 having more ranked teams in the BCS Top 20 than any other conference? The SEC (Florida, Alabama and LSU) and Ben Ten (Iowa, Ohio State and Penn State) each have three teams and the Big 12 (Texas and Oklahoma State), Big East (Cincinnati and Pitt), ACC (Georgia Tech and Miami) and Mountain West (TCU and Utah) each have two. The WAC (Boise State) and Conference USA (Houston) have one apiece.

Eleven people were perfect at 5-0 last week, led by J.T. Montgomery, who had a 16-point differential in the USC-Oregon game. He picked the Ducks to beat USC 45-34 (they won 47-20) and commented, “Defense takes the week off and the home crowd makes it tough on SC.”

Bingo.

Montgomery is also decisively No. 1 in the season standings with an impressive 38-8 record.

Pick Note: If you miss more than two weeks of picks, you are ineligible for the season standings. Please pick the final score of the WSU-Arizona game as the tie-breaker in the comments selection below.

    AZ 45 and WSU 17

  2. HappyHour Says:

“…Pac-10 having more ranked teams in the BCS Top 20 than any other conference?”

well, so much for that east coast bias BS.

on the issue with cal’s ranking. although it does appear they ARE a “little” overrated, you really can’t argue much of a case for any team out there that is any better right now. what i do know about cal is that they have a stellar O that just can’t compensate enough for that horrendous D. an O that is probably 2 good Olinemen away from dominating games. i think after this weekend’s game with osu, cal will be dispatched from the rankings for the remainder of the season.

  3. Colorado Mark Says:

Much more challenging week for picks. OSU over Cal and Stanford over Oregon (I’ve got to do something to try and catch up).

    AZ 55
    WSU 20

    Go Cats!

  4. Ashton Says:

Nasty picks there and I’m thinking this would be a good week to stay out of Vegas. The free lunch ride we all had over the last two weeks is over. This week could be a “paper bag moment” for some.

(I also think Javier may have changed it up due to last week standings, but come on…leaving in the Washington/UCLA pick wouldn’t have done us any favors ;-)

32 point spread as of this writing. I’m thinking we have ten million reasons to give the cats a few more points on the soon-to-be brand new scoreboard.

    Arizona – 47
    Cougs – 10

  5. Boguscat Says:

Arizona 43 WSU 13 We’ll probably miss some FG’s and XPT’s….other than that it should be all CATS!

  6. JT Says:

    AZ 41
    wsu 24

AZ could score more but starters sit out at least half of the fourth quarter. Could be a fun homecoming game for the fans. Look for special teams to step up for the cats.

  7. drivera Says:

I don’t know happy hour. I was at the ASU Cal game and both teams looked well lets just say “less than stellar”. I’d say Standford is better than Cal, but their record may not merit a top 20 rank..

  8. Biglebow Says:

    Arizona 45, WSU 16

I didn’t see the UCLA/UW game on this weeks pac-10 poll…should it be?

  9. Javier M. Says:

Biglebow and Co.: The Washington-UCLA game was inadvertently left off the original slate of games. It has been included in a separate link within the post above. Please make your selection there.

  10. Catman Says:

    Arizona 38
    WSU 13

  11. Ashton Says:

Sorry Biglebow. I was having a little fun with the fact that it would be a hard game to pick. I’ve only been picking for three weeks but usually it’s the PAC Ten games and a top 25 match-up.

It’s not part of the picks.

Sorry if my post caused confusion.

(but for what it’s worth – Washington by 7)

  12. Jimmy Says:

    Arizona 45
    WSU 10

This is a really tough week for match-ups, other than the UofA-WSU and ASU-USC games.

  13. Ashton Says:

    Dang…I didn’t fully read Javier’s post.

Okay, the Washington game is part of the picks but as a separate link.

I agree with Jimmy but there exists the possibility there that ASU will scrap for their Bowl lives and USC will meltdown now that the crown no longer weighs heavily on their heads.

I would say that all these games are potential upsets, Arizona excluded. In the end, it just means an exciting football weekend for all of us.

  14. the_dude Says:

    Wildcats 55
    Cougars 9

  15. Portland Catfan #2 Says:

    UA 49 WAZZU 3

  16. Javier M. Says:

Arizona will roll to a 48-6 victory setting the stage for a very interesting November for the Wildcats.

  17. vegasallen Says:

Much tougher games to predict this week.

    UA 45-10

  18. JasonCr Says:

    Arizona 38, Washington St. 17

  19. Anthony G. Says:

When will Bryson Beirne get in? Arizona 48, WSU 13.

  20. azgood Says:

    ‘Tone, amen brother!

I’ve been asking this question since C. Michigan.

    Since the Fort.

BTW, wasn’t young Bryson, the young man with the passion that Byrne(s), a **** coming out of HS?

I hear he has a cannon for an arm.

    He’s already redshirted before, correct?

If so, and he doesn’t get in this year, what next?

He just seems like such a good kid, a big, strong, healthy QB who can play the game.

  21. Ashton Says:

    Ugh…

I took it on the chin in a very wild and wacky football weekend and went 4 and 5.

Still, I’m strangely satisfied. Pac-Ten is a toss-up and there is humor in the fact that the toughest part of Arizona’s schedule may be over.

    At this point, bring…it…on!!!

    Bear Down!

  22. Ashton Says:

    Whoops – 3 and 4.

If Notre Dame and Iowa were part of the picks, it would be 3 and 6. I think the big question tomorrow is how far Arizona will move up in the rankings. I’m guessing will be sniffing around lucky number 13?
