READER INPUT RE: PETER VECSEY COLUMN ABOUT JENNINGS:
Peter VesceyWe received an e-mail today from WildcatinNW, who showed us comments made by New York Post columnist and NBA insider Peter Vescey regarding his recent column about Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings and the UA. In the article titled, “Bucks star was dissed by Arizona,” Vescey questions why media reports indicate that Jennings chose to play in Europe instead of Arizona when it was the Cats who dropped the ball in his recruitment:
WILDCATINW: Peter – Your title “Bucks star was dissed by Arizona” is deceptive and misleading. Do you have an axe to grind with the U of A? Sounds like you’re just pissed with management over the draft. As far as I’ve read, the option the natives really wanted was Stephen Curry, not your boy Jennings. Believe me, we would have loved Brandon to play in Tucson, but as you already know, he didn’t qualify with his test scores. It’s hard to see how the situation at Arizona at that time constitutes us ‘dissing’ Brandon. Granted, Europe might not have been his first choice, but it turned out to be his only viable option, and that wasn’t Arizona’s fault. At least the Knicks management gives you plenty to write about.
VESCEY: This is the first I knew about that headline. I don’t write headlines and my story certainly does not convey that the Univerity of Arizona (I would’ve loved both my kids to go there) dissed Jennings in any way, shape or form. Headline writers can make writers look awfully good or awfully stupid.

| JEFFERSON LEADS SPURS WITH SEASON-HIGH 29 POINTS Excerpt from a San Antonio Express-News article about Richard Jefferson and San Antonio’s win over Dallas on Wednesday night: Eight months ago, the Spurs and Mavericks engaged in a five-game, first-round playoff series that, for citizens of San Antonio, was pretty forgettable. For a pair of soon-to-be-former Milwaukee Bucks, meanwhile, the 2009 postseason might as well not have happened at all. Keith Bogans decompressed at his house in Orlando, Fla. Richard Jefferson returned home to California, and ignored the NBA altogether. “I was going through a bout of depression at the time, because we didn’t make the playoffs,” Jefferson said. “I tried to tune out basketball.” On Wednesday night, Jefferson and Bogans found themselves squarely in the middle of the I-35 rivalry. There was no place else they’d rather be. Read the rest of this article by clicking on this link: Ex-Bucks stop here in Spurs’ victory over Mavs (San Antonio Express-News) |

Th headline writer for the Vecsey column did a pretty miserable job and did the UA a huge disservice in the process.
Other notes-
Jerryd doesn’t waste any time when he actually gets in games: 15 shots in 9 minutes of game play!? Not sure that is the best way to convince McMillan that you have learned to be a PG.
Brandon Jennings…. this kid actually backs up the talk. Granted he has said lots of dumb things, but he is young. And the kid can play.

Wow, great explaination on the headline. I remember reading that article and being miffed not being able to find anything about jennings being dissed. Very misleading headline. I’m glad he didn’t write it.

the problem is that they haven’t explained or retracted the statement. i know no one reads retractions anyway, but it seems like the responsible thing to do if you care about your name and reputation. just copping out by blaming it on the headline writer is kind of chickensh*t if you ask me

the_dude,
I agree, but in reality, this is the Post. As a longtime NE resident, I can assure you that journalistic integrity has never been part of their criteria. I’d say that their bread and butter is thinking up the best possible puns to make outrageous headlines. Unfortunately, this title was a lazy attempt to attract readers with an eye-catching headline that does not match the content. I applaud you on effort to at least comment on the article and set the record straight. I intended to do the same thing, but got too lazy to register for yet another website just to post one comment. Kuods to you.

AzTransplant–
thanks, i wasn’t aware of the Post’s reputation. i don’t think it’s a huge deal or anything, but i guess it just wanted to get a different opinion on the board so that anyone reading it might see that the whole story wasn’t exactly told. it appears i wasn’t the only one.
probably not much damage could be done by a sloppy piece, anyhow. with our recent success in recruiting the NE, i think it’s safe to assume that the perception of our program is just fine up there. i’d hate to see that swayed at all by a lazy writer who doesn’t care to check the titles on his pieces or make corrections when they’re needed, but it prob won’t anyhow. oh well.

I just finished watching ESPN’s college basketball preseason preview, Arizona received hardly a mention.
They previewed the PAC-10 and again hardly a mention of Arizona.
They previewed the NCAA Tournament and no mention of Arizona.
Of course Andy Katz was one of the panel of 3, so the snub should be of no surprise, i am hoping the coaching staff and players take notice of the lack of respect shown towards Arizona.
Yes we have a new coaching staff and a new system being implemented. Yes we have a lot of new players and freshmen added, but i believe this team will surprise a lot of people come the Pac-10 and tournament time. Come to think of it, this could be a good thing sneaking up on the competition all year long.
Go Cats.

AzTransplant,
If you look closer, Jerryd plays 9 min a game over the 4 he’s played in. So it’s actually 15 shots in 36 minutes of game time. And he is averaging almost 2 assists a game in under 10 minutes. That isn’t too shabby.

My God, we don’t need “someone else’s” headline to read just how Vescey feels about the University of Arizona Wildcats.
This is a first-rate hatchet job by a second-rate journalist and a third-rate paper.
But do we really expect anything else from the likes of the Post – the NY Post?
The eastern establishment media do the bidding for their little darlings and then the rest of us are supposed to be impressed.
Javier and Anthony, how common is it for a reporter to have his story come out on the 10th and then have a reader blog back his disapproval of said story two whole days later, at least, and then for that reporter to claim ignorance as to the title given to his story by his editor?
So we’re to believe Vescey had no idea what sat above his story until WildcatinNW pointed it out to him on the 12th or thereabouts? The headline was the first bullet going to the back of the head, bottom of the skull. The story was the chamber being emptied out, line by line. The body would still be in the trunk of Vescey’s car, or maybe nicely tucked away inside a top-load freezer somewhere at the Post, if not for WildcatinNW’s quick thinking.
Oh well, Vescey did say he would’ve loved it if his kids had come to UA, after all.
Please.
