| Excerpt from a How to Watch Sports article about Mike Bibby’s unusual MVP vote in 2002:
That’s right, the man who does the voice of Kermit the Frog got a single MVP vote in 2002. With the Sacramento Kings eating the crumbs from the master’s table in the NBA lately, it’s easy to forget that they won 61 games in the 2001-2002 season, with Mike Bibby at the point. The Kings went all the way to the Western Conference Finals that year, where they lost in seven games to the Shaq-Kobe Lakers. Bibby was in a contract year—only his fourth year in the league—and he parlayed the season into a $80.5 million contract. He averaged 13.7 points and five assists, and hit a few clutch shots (including the game winner in Game 5 against the Lakers). His scoring production would increase each year after that with the Kings, but they would also win fewer and fewer games each year. |
