REPLACING A LEGEND
Only a 25-percent success rate exists for schools that had to replace a legend who won a national title since the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. The YEAR column is when the coach was replaced. The year they won a national title is in parenthesis after their name.
| YEAR | SCHOOL | LEGEND | SUCCESSOR | BACKGROUND/RESULT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1988 | Kansas | Larry Brown (1988) | Roy Williams | Williams was a 10-year assistant under Dean Smith at North Carolina upon his hire. He took the Jayhawks to four Final Fours before leaving in 2003 to coach North Carolina. |
| 1992 | UNLV | Jerry Tarkanian (1990) | Rollie Massimino | Massimino resigned at Villanova to replace Tark. After two average seasons, he was forced to quit after it was revealed he was getting paid more than what was reported to the state by then UNLV president Robert Maxson. The Rebels have not gone beyond the Sweet 16 since Tarkanian was forced out amid NCAA recruiting violations. |
| 1992 | Villanova | Rollie Massimino (1985) | Steve Lappas | Lappas was head coach at Manhattan before replacing Massimino. Lappas coached at Villanova for nine years, never advancing past the NCAA second round. |
| 1997 | North Carolina | Dean Smith (1993) | Bill Guthridge | Guthridge was a 30-year assistant to Smith before he was suddenly put in the head coaching role when Smith retired before the 1997-98 season. Guthridge coached three seasons and led the Tar Heels to two Final Fours but he lost 24 games in his last two seasons before retiring. The Tarheels continued to spiral downward with Matt Doherty before Roy Williams returned to Chapel Hill. |
| 1997 | Kentucky | Rick Pitino (1996) | Tubby Smith | Smith was head coach at Georgia when he was hired by Kentucky. He served as an assistant to Rick Pitino there earlier in the decade. Smith lasted 10 years, drawing the ire from Kentucky boosters for his slower pace of play and inability to win a title after winning one with Pitino's players in 1998. Kentucky has continued to struggle under Billy Gillispie, who was fired on March 27. |
| 2000 | Indiana | Bob Knight (1976, 1981, 1987) | Mike Davis | Davis, a career assistant, was hired as the head coach on an interim basis when Knight was removed two months before the 2000 season. Davis was named the permanent coach after that season. He was able to take Indiana to the 2002 national title game. But after losing that game, he failed to advance beyond the second round in the next four years and was replaced by Kelvin Sampson. |
| 2001 | Louisville | Denny Crum (1980, 1986) | Rick Pitino | Pitino was out of a job after his forced resignation from the Boston Celtics. He coached Kentucky to the 1996 national title. Louisville finished in the Elite Eight this year. |
| 2002 | Arkansas | Nolan Richardson (1994) | Stan Heath | After Richardson was fired amid controversy over his allegations of prejudice by the Arkansas administration, Stan Heath was hired from Kent State. Heath took Kent State to the Elite Eight in 2002 but he never coached the Razorbacks beyond the first round before being fired in 2007. |
| 2009 | Arizona | Lute Olson (1997) | Sean Miller | Xavier's successful young coach agreed to be Arizona's head coach on April 6, 2009. |
